Meet your teacher, Tamara
I first picked up embroidery during lockdown in 2020, and it quickly became much more than a hobby – it changed the way I see the world.
Stitching encourages me to slow down and really look: wildflowers growing by the roadside can inspire me to try new stitches, while the changing colours of the seasons find their way into my thread choices. It’s given me a whole new visual language for exploring the world around me.
Before lockdown, I hadn’t had a creative outlet in years. Although I’m an art college graduate (and I even trained as an art and design teacher in my twenties), I ended up following a more corporate career path, and somehow it didn’t seem to leave time for making things anymore.
Learning a handful of simple stitches reignited a creative spark that had been lying dormant for years, and I’m so glad it did. In 2022, I left my job as a business writing trainer and set up The Hoop in Hand with one simple goal: to share the joy embroidery brings me with the world.
Since then, my embroidery patterns have been enjoyed by stitchers in more than 50 countries – and now opening my Brighton studio to teach embroidery feels like everything has come full circle.
I’m enormously grateful for everything embroidery has brought into my life, and I can’t wait to share some of that magic with you. I’d love to see where the stitches might take you – come join me in the studio and let’s find out together.

Friday pop-ins
On Friday afternoons, my door is open from 1:30–4:30pm if you’d like to pop by the studio.
You can try your hand at embroidery for free to see if it’s for you before booking a workshop. Or if you’d like some help with a pattern you’re working on, I’ll be more than happy to give you steer!

Visiting the studio

Studio 3 (upstairs on the balcony), Brighton Open Market, Marshalls Row, BN1 4JU
Opening hours:
The studio is open for all scheduled workshops and Friday pop-ins. Outside of those hours, please email me if you’d like to arrange a visit.
Getting here:
Brighton Open Market is very well served by public transport. Brighton train station is less than a 10-minute walk away, with regular services to and from London. Several buses also stop nearby on London Road and Ditchling Road. If you’re coming by car, parking is available nearby at London Road car park.
Accessibility:
Brighton Open market is wheelchair accessible, with level access to the ground floor and public restrooms. There’s an accessible lift to the upper floor (where the studio is located), but please email me in advance of your visit if you have specialised accessibility needs.
