Join me for a relaxed and friendly one-day embroidery workshop, where you'll create a beautiful folk-inspired forest sampler and discover just how much you can achieve with a needle and thread.

This workshop is aimed at anyone who’d like to explore their creativity in stitches, whether you’re new to embroidery or excited to see where needlework could take you next. And even if you don’t think of yourself as a creative person at all, I invite you to discover what you can make in just a few hours – I think you’ll surprise yourself...

Throughout the day, you’ll learn 10 foundational embroidery stitches as you work up your own forest sampler in your preferred colourway. I’ll also share my insider tips for getting the most from your materials, giving you the confidence to experiment with techniques you can use in future projects.

One of the most exciting things to come out of these workshops is that no two samplers ever turn out the same. You’ll leave with your own unique piece of frame-worthy embroidery art well underway, and all the materials you need to finish it off at home.

Class sizes are limited to just six participants, ensuring everyone receives plenty of individual support and guidance. Workshops run on alternate Thursdays and Saturdays in my Brighton studio, from 10:30–4:30pm with a break for lunch.

  • You'll get everything you need to complete your own folk-inspired forest sampler in your preferred colour palette (choose from teal and olive or burnt orange and pink on the day):

    • Dyed linen that’s pre-printed with the pattern, so you can get straight to stitching

    • Six skeins of DMC stranded cotton

    • A pre-printed practice piece on natural linen for experimenting

    • A 6-inch beech embroidery hoop

    • Embroidery needles in different sizes

    • Comprehensive handouts so you can finish your sampler at home.

    All the tools you’ll need will be provided for you to use on the day – but if you have your own, please bring them.

  • Level
    This workshop is open to all levels – perfect if you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned stitcher looking for a fresh approach to hand embroidery.

    Age policy
    I’ve designed this workshop with adults in mind. Young people aged 14–17 are also very welcome to attend when accompanied by a responsible, participating adult (18+). The accompanying adult must book and pay for their own place and participate alongside the young person for the duration of the workshop.

    If you're booking for someone under 18 years old, please email me before booking, so I can make sure the workshop will be a good fit for their age, experience and confidence.

  • The Hoop in Hand is located at Studio 3, Upstairs at The Open Market, Marshalls Row, Brighton, BN1 4JU.

    Brighton Open Market is very well served by public transport. Brighton train station is less than a 10-minute walk away, and several buses stop nearby on London Road and Ditchling Road. If you’re coming by car, parking is available nearby at London Road car park. Please keep in mind parking can be limited (especially on Saturdays), so please plan your journey to allow time to find a space.

    Accessibility:
    Brighton Open market is wheelchair accessible, with level access to the ground floor and public restrooms. There’s also an accessible lift to the upper floor (where the studio is located). If you have specialised accessibility needs, please email me in advance so I can make your visit as comfortable as possible.

  • Bookings
    Each workshop is limited to six participants. To reserve your place, you’ll need to pay for your workshop in full at the time of booking. Once your payment has gone through, you’ll receive an order confirmation email.

    Cancellations
    If you're no longer able to attend, please give me as much notice as possible by emailing tamara@thehoopinhand.com. If you let me know at least 14 days before your workshop, I'll be happy to transfer your booking to another available date. Where an alternative workshop date isn’t available, I’ll refund you in full.

    If you email me less than 14 days before your workshop, or you don’t show on the day, I’m unable to offer a refund. I’ll do my best to offer you an alternative date where possible – but please note this isn’t guaranteed. Alternatively, if you’re unable to attend, you can send someone else in your place. Please just let me know their name before the workshop, so I know who to expect.

    In the very rare event I may need to cancel a workshop, I’ll give you as much notice as possible. I’ll offer you an alternative workshop date or a full refund on your booking – whichever is your preference. (Please note, I can only refund your workshop booking – I can't reimburse travel, accommodation or any other associated costs.)

    Gift cards
    The same booking and cancellation terms apply if you book a workshop using a gift card.

Meet your teacher, Tamara

I first picked up embroidery during lockdown in 2020, when learning a handful of simple stitches reignited my creative spark. I quickly set to work designing my own patterns, and I’ve barely put my hoop down since. I always have at least project on the go, and about a dozen ideas to stitch up next.

My love of stitching led me to set up The Hoop in Hand two years later, so I could share the enjoy embroidery brings me with other people. Fast forward to today, and my embroidery patterns have been enjoyed by thousands of stitchers all over the world.

Now I’m bringing together my love of hand embroidery and years of teaching experience to share that joy in person. Come and join me for a workshop in my newly opened Brighton studio, and let’s discover where needle and thread might take you.
